What is Bone Mineral Density?
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) or a Dual Energy X-Ray Absorpitometry (DEXA) scan is a medical procedure of advanced technology to safely, accurately and painlessly determine the risk of developing osteoporosis and/or the diagnosis of osteoporosis. DEXA is a measurement of bone mineral density (BMD), usually taken in the lumbar spine and hip. The BMD is considered the most accurate and advanced technique to test patients who are at high risk for developing osteoporosis. This procedure is extremely safe and non-invasive. The scan measures the amount of X-Ray absorbed by the bone to determine the individual's BMD. The measurement is then compared to normal BMD values of individuals of the patient's sex and approximate age bracket. Based on this comparison, the physician can prescribe a proactive treatment plan to avoid osteoporosis or diminish its damage.

Why a Bone Mineral Density?
Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is the single most important predictor of Osteoporotic fracture risks. Early diagnosis and treatment makes a big difference in treatment. An X-Ray is the best way to non-invasively see inside your body and is ideal for:
A DEXA scan should be advised with these occurrences:
Can anyone have a Bone Mineral Density?
No. Providing information about your medical condition and history is crucial. X-Rays emit a level of radiation into the body in order to obtain the images. Women who are or may be pregnant should not undergo any type of X-Ray. Inform your health care provider if you are pregnant or might be pregnant. Also, if you have any allergies, asthma, diabetes, etc. An X-Ray is a non-invasive, painless procedure that is tolerated by all patients.
What do I expect during a Bone Mineral Density?
A DEXA scan machine is used to concentrate a small, carefully controlled amount of radiation on the lumbar spine and/or hip part of the body. Pillows may be used to position the hip or spine properly. You will not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
You will be asked to remove clothing and change into a patient gown or wear loose, comfortable clothing, as some articles of clothing interfere with the X-Ray. The patient will be informed to remove any metal in their clothing of the lower back and hip area.
Several measures limit your exposure to X-Rays and help protect other parts of the body by covering yourself with an apron shield filled with lead. This protects sensitive organs that are not being studies. You also may be asked to avoid using body powders, lotions or deodorants that can produce a shadow on the film. For some procedures, you may be asked to remove certain pieces of jewelry. During the exam, you may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds as you remain very still.
Most DEXA scans take approximately 5 to 15 minutes to complete, depending upon the scan.
When will I get the results of my Bone Mineral Density Exam?
A Board Certified Radiologist will review and evaluate your Bone Mineral Density (BMD) images within 24 hours following your scan. The radiologist will provide your referring physician with an interpretation of the results of the BMD exam. Your health-care provider can then make a diagnosis and explain what the findings mean to you.
